What is the CCL Exam? Complete Guide 2026

What Is the CCL Exam?

The CCL (Credentialed Community Language) test is a language assessment administered by NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) in Australia. It is specifically designed to evaluate your ability to interpret between English and another community language in everyday real-world settings.

Why Does the CCL Exam Matter?

Passing the CCL test earns you 5 bonus points toward your Australian Permanent Residency (PR) application under the skilled migration system. For many applicants, those 5 points can be the difference between receiving an invitation to apply and waiting another year.

CCL Exam Format

The CCL exam consists of two dialogue interpreting tasks:

  • Dialogue 1: Approximately 300 words, covering a community service topic (healthcare, housing, social services, education, or legal matters).
  • Dialogue 2: Approximately 300 words, covering a different community topic.

Each dialogue is presented in segments. You listen to a segment in one language (English or your community language) and then interpret it into the other language. The test is delivered in audio format — no written transcripts are provided.

Scoring: The 90-Point System

NAATI scores each dialogue out of 45 points, for a maximum of 90 points total. The pass mark is 63 out of 90 (70%). Scores are divided across three dimensions — learn how CCL is scored in detail:

  • Accuracy: Did you convey all the information without omissions or additions?
  • Language quality: Was your language natural, grammatically correct, and appropriate for the context?
  • Interpreting technique: Did you handle segments smoothly, maintaining register and pacing?

Which Languages Are Available?

As of 2026, NAATI offers CCL testing in over 55 languages. BuMate currently supports 39 of those language pairs, including Arabic, Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, and more. Check the CCL exam page for the full list.

How Long Is the Credential Valid?

A CCL credential is valid for 5 years from the date of the test (for credentials issued from 9 August 2022 onwards). Credentials issued before that date are valid for 3 years. You can use it to claim PR points during that window. If you need to renew, you must sit the exam again.

How to Prepare for CCL

The most effective preparation strategy involves:

  1. Practice with realistic dialogues that match the topics and format of the real exam.
  2. Get scored feedback on each attempt so you know exactly what to improve.
  3. Build consistency — aim for 3–5 practice sessions per week in the 8 weeks before your exam.
